HOUSTON – (March 29, 2006) – BMC Software, Inc. (NYSE: BMC) today announced the release of critical elements of a comprehensive Discovery solution for customers moving toward Business Service Management (BSM). Data collected and information processed through the use of this solution is timely, accurate, true and complete, and provides the critical technology for initial population and ongoing maintenance of a configuration management database (CMDB).
Serving as cornerstones of the complete Discovery solution, BMC Foundation Discovery and BMC Topology Discovery provide asset discovery and relationship mappings of logical and physical dependencies inherent in any enterprise application. They are key to a strong BSM foundation, including the utilization of a CMDB, as defined by the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL®).
ITIL recommends that a CMDB include a comprehensive Discovery solution. BMC Discovery solutions support the ITIL framework by providing relationship mappings, and facilitating rapid creation of a service model.
BMC Foundation Discovery and BMC Topology Discovery work in concert with the BMC Atrium CMDB, which provides key, enabling technologies needed for fundamental ITIL processes that lead to BSM success. By maintaining the data in the CMDB, BMC Discovery solutions enable IT organizations to align their infrastructure to meet the needs of the business. As such, it helps to build the foundation for a successful BSM solution.
BMC customer and enterprise retailer Select Comfort uses BMC Discovery solutions as part of their overall IT environment for more than 2,500 employees. “The value that BMC Discovery solutions deliver to our business is apparent every day,” said Rick Larson, director of IT Services at Select Comfort. “Accurate and automated discovery information is essential to our decision making. The automated nature of BMC Discovery and its connection to our business process is critical to our success.”
The comprehensive, modular Discovery solution comprises the new BMC Foundation Discovery and BMC Topology Discovery, as well as BMC Configuration Discovery and BMC Identity Discovery. The complete BMC Discovery solution addresses the entire spectrum of asset discovery activities and replaces fragmented tools that require cumbersome and error-prone manual steps. In doing so, the solution provides a unified, automated process for identifying all assets, asset configurations, application dependencies and end users in the environment; cataloging them in a common database; and keeping the data current by discovering changes and keeping data up to date.
“Enterprise organizations are beginning to understand the necessity of a solid discovery solution as an essential first step toward BSM,” said Kelly Blice, director of solutions marketing for BMC Software. “Since BMC first unveiled the concept of BSM, we’ve been delivering solutions to support this now industry-recognized approach to managing IT from the perspective of the business to lower costs, drive revenue, and mitigate risk.”
BMC Foundation Discovery and BMC Topology Discovery are currently available worldwide.
